<p>Some of our expatriate workers have accomplished some scientific research in the course of their missions in Laos. Dr. <a href="https://2020.sfe-laos.org/les-projets/medical/recherche/equipe-au-laos/#Günther_et_Rose-Marie_Slesak?lang=en">Günther Slesak</a> has namely published serveral interessant articles. Several studies have also been conducted during the <a href="#recherches-attapeu">Atapeu</a>.medical project.</p>

<p>Grâce au parrainage du SFE, une jeune enseignante de l&#8217;école d&#8217;infirmières d&#8217;Attapeu a obtenu une licence d&#8217;infirmière à l&#8217;Université des Sciences de la Santé de Vientiane.</p>



<p>Après deux ans d’études, elle est maintenant de retour à l’école d’infirmières, prête à partager ses connaissances et compétences nouvellement acquises. Elle revient avec joie sur son expérience.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Comment ce diplôme de licence vous aidera-t-il dans votre travail d&#8217;enseignante-infirmière ?</h5>



<p>J&#8217;ai beaucoup appris sur les méthodologies d&#8217;enseignement et d&#8217;apprentissage et j&#8217;ai pu les comparer aux méthodes que nous utilisons ici à Attapeu. Certaines matières pédagogiques pourraient être améliorées en utilisant différentes approches et méthodologies. J&#8217;espère travailler avec mes collègues pour les aider à améliorer également leur propres méthodes d&#8217;enseignement.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Quels ont été les plus grands défis pour vous personnellement pendant vos études à Vientiane ?</h5>



<p>Mes défis concernaient les compétences en communication et en rédaction. Nous avons dû faire de nombreuses présentations et j&#8217;ai dû étudier très dur cela, notamment en lisant de nombreux articles de revues scientifiques et médicales. J&#8217;ai également développé des compétences en rédaction de rapports.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Quel a été votre sujet préféré pendant vos études ?</h5>



<p>Il s’agissait du processus de soins infirmiers pour adultes. Les formateurs enseignaient ces sujets si bien qu&#8217;ils m&#8217;ont vraiment donné envie d&#8217;en apprendre davantage. </p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Qu’est-ce qui vous a le plus plu dans vos études ?</h5>



<p>Je suis une personne timide et donc très nerveuse à l’idée de prendre la parole ou de présenter quoi que ce soit. Le cours m&#8217;a aidé à mettre en pratique mes compétences en communication et en gestion. J&#8217;ai progressivement gagné en confiance dans ma communication avec les autres.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Qu’allez-vous enseigner ici à l’école d’infirmières&nbsp;?</h5>



<p>En accord avec le directeur de l&#8217;école d&#8217;infirmières, je continuerai à enseigner les soins infirmiers de santé communautaire, une matière que j&#8217;avais enseignée avant mes études à Vientiane.</p>

Retour d’une étudiante infirmière parrainée par le SFE


<p>A la fin du printemps de cette année, le SFE a démarré un nouveau projet dans le but de renforcer les services de santé et le développement communautaire dans la province de Sékong.</p>



<p>Après quelques travaux dans les locaux et le recrutement de nouveaux membres d’équipe, les premières activités ont démarré en fanfare.</p>



<p>La première étape était le soutien de l’équipe qui forme les formateurs de l’hôpital provincial. L&#8217;objectif est de renforcer les compétences en transfert de connaissances et les techniques d&#8217;enseignement de cette équipe d&#8217;infirmières, qui vient d&#8217;accueillir 4 nouvelles formatrices. Au cours des trois prochaines années, elles voyageront avec le SFE dans tous les établissements de santé partenaires pour dispenser des formations.</p>



<p>Les formateurs de l&#8217;hôpital provincial et l&#8217;équipe de SFE ont ensuite dispensé les premières formations au personnel médical du centre de santé de Tongkhen. La formation portait sur la gestion des hémorragies graves après l&#8217;accouchement et sur la prise du pouls des patients.</p>



<p>Enfin, l&#8217;équipe du projet a organisé des réunions et commencé à planifier la construction du nouveau système d&#8217;eau dans le village de Tamdeng avec les villageois et les autorités locales.</p>

Démarrage en fanfare à Sékong


<p><em>Dive into the story of Anne Solbach, an expat in Laos and staff member at the hospital project in Sekong.</em></p>



<p>It is still early in the morning when we leave the Sékong office to visit one of our partner villages. As we head deeper into the mountains, the roads become less passable. The rain over the past few days has taken its toll, but our driver is doing his best to avoid the potholes. Today, our team consists of two trainers from the Lamam district Health Office, the SFE community facilitator, and an expat nurse.</p>



<p>After a two-hours drive, we reach a small village of about 30 bamboo houses nestled in a lush forest. The view of the mountains and valleys is magnificent. Our arrival is quickly noticed. The villagers watch us from afar while we unload the equipment. Training can begin. We call the villagers who come with the handwashing calender they received during the first training. They show us how they wash their hands with a bucket of water and soap.</p>

<p>Some remember the seven steps of hand washing they were taught during our previous visit. Others did not participate and are discovering these gestures for the first time. &#8220;After washing your hands, you dry them on your pants and skirts, right? &#8221; says one of the trainers. &#8220;No, no! &#8221; the villagers reply, laughing. They have learned not to dry their hands on their own clothes.</p>



<p>The group grows as more curious villagers join us, and the training continues in small groups. We all move into the shade of a large bamboo house on stilts. We are joined by the three families who live in the house. This time, the chief of the village himself leads the training. We watch the group as they seem to get into the game, showing these families the steps of hand washing. After each training session, the participants receive a bar of soap and a pack of salt for their family.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s already afternoon. It is time to leave the village to return safely to Sekong before it gets dark.</p>



<p>In total, 48 adults from this village were trained &#8211; 24 women and 24 men. Not counting the children and the people around us who watched the training and hopefully learned a lot too. We will be returning to this village in a few weeks to keep on training and raising awareness, but also to evaluate our own training methods.</p>



<p>Indeed, our recurring challenge is to see the transition from theory to practice and to long-term behaviour change. Despite the villagers&#8217; motivation, it is sometimes difficult to implement certain habits.</p>



<p>In order to evaluate these changes among the beneficiaries of our projects, we have established the RANAS method: Risks, Attitudes, Norms, Abilities, Self-regulation. As part of this project, we decided to focus on two behaviors in the villages: handwashing before eating and women going to health facilities for antenatal care.</p>



<p>First, the project collected information from several villages in Sekong province in early 2023. Using this information, the team developed specific activities to be carried out with villagers on these two behaviours.</p>

<p>First, the project collected information from several villages in Sekong province in early 2023. Using this information, the team developed specific activities to be carried out with villagers on these two behaviours.</p>



<p>In July, a team was formed to learn these specific activities: trainers from the Lamam District Health Office, village health volunteers, and women&#8217;s association representatives from four partner villages. These new trainers then went to the partner villages to implement the activities and monitor the villagers between August and October. At the end of the year, a third visit will be made to the villages to collect final data.</p>



<p>It is by implementing such working, monitoring and evaluation methods, and by being in a process of continuous improvement, that we ensure that our projects have a positive and lasting impact.</p>

Does training make a difference?

<p>Il est encore tôt le matin lorsque nous quittons le bureau de Sékong pour visiter l’un de nos villages partenaires. À mesure que nous nous enfonçons dans les montagnes, les routes deviennent de moins en moins praticables. Ces derniers jours la pluie a fait des ravages mais notre chauffeur fait de son mieux pour éviter les trous dans la route. Aujourd’hui, notre équipe est composée de deux formateurs du bureau de santé du district de Lamam, le facilitateur communautaire du SFE Sékong et une infirmière expatriée.</p>



<p>Après deux heures de route nous arrivons dans un petit village de 30 maisons en bambous niché au beau milieu d’une forêt luxuriante. La vue sur les montagnes et les vallées est magnifique. Notre arrivée est vite remarquée : les villageois nous observent avec curiosité pendant que nous déchargeons le matériel. La formation peut commencer. Nous appelons les villageois qui se présentent avec le calendrier de lavage des mains qu’ils ont reçu lors de la première formation. Avec un seau d’eau et du savon, ils nous montrent comment ils se lavent les mains.</p>

<p>Certains se souviennent des sept étapes du lavage des mains qui leur ont été enseignées lors de notre précédente visite. D&#8217;autres n&#8217;y ont pas participé et découvrent ces gestes pour la première fois.<br>« <em>Après vous être lavé les mains, vous les séchez sur vos pantalons et vos jupes, n&#8217;est-ce pas ?</em> », lance l&#8217;un des formateurs. « <em>Non, non !</em> » répondent les villageois en riant. Ils ont retenu qu&#8217;ils ne devraient pas sécher leurs mains sur leurs propres vêtements.</p>



<p>Le groupe s’étoffe à mesure que des villageois plus curieux se joignent à nous et la formation se poursuit en petits groupes. Nous nous dirigeons tous à l’ombre d’une grande maison sur pilotis en bambou. Les trois familles qui vivent dans la maison se joignent à nous mais cette fois, c’est le chef du village lui-même qui va faire la formation. Nous observons le groupe qui semble se prendre au jeu en montrant les étapes du lavage des mains à ces familles. Après chaque formation, les participants reçoivent un morceau de savon et un paquet de sel pour leur famille.</p>

<p>C’est déjà l’après-midi. Il est l’heure de quitter le village pour retourner en toute sécurité à Sékong avant la nuit.</p>



<p>Au total, 48 adultes de ce village ont été formés &#8211; 24 femmes et 24 hommes. Nous n&#8217;avons pas compté les enfants et les personnes autour, qui ont observé la formation et qui, espérons-le, ont également beaucoup appris. Nous retournerons dans ce village dans quelques semaines afin de poursuivre notre travail de sensibilisation et d’évaluer nos propres méthodes de formation.</p>



<p>En effet, notre défi récurrent est de constater le passage de la théorie à la pratique, et à un changement de comportement sur le long terme. Malgré la motivation des villageois, la mise en œuvre de certaines habitudes est parfois difficile.</p>



<p>Afin d’évaluer ces changements parmi les bénéficiaires de nos projets, nous avons instauré la méthode RANAS : Risques, Attitudes, Normes, Aptitudes, Auto-régulation. Dans le cadre ce projet, nous avons décidé de nous focaliser sur deux comportements dans les villages : le lavage des mains avant de manger et les femmes se rendant dans les établissements de santé pour leur suivi de grossesse (visite prénatale).</p>



<p>Tout d&#8217;abord, le projet a collecté des informations dans plusieurs villages de la province de Sékong au début de 2023. Grâce à ces informations, l&#8217;équipe a développé des activités spéciales à réaliser avec les villageois concernant ces deux comportements.</p>

<p>En juillet, une équipe a été formée pour apprendre ces activités spéciales : des formateurs du bureau de santé du district de Lamam, des volontaires de santé du village et des représentants de l&#8217;Union des femmes de quatre villages partenaires. Ensuite, ces nouveaux formateurs sont allés dans les villages partenaires pour mettre en œuvre les activités et faire un suivi des villageois entre août et octobre. A la fin de l’année, une troisième visite des villages sera effectuée pour collecter les données finales.</p>



<p>C&#8217;est en implémentant de telles méthodes de travail, de suivi et d&#8217;évaluation et en étant dans une démarche d&#8217;amélioration continue que nous nous assurons que nos projets ont un impact positif et durable.</p>

<p>Grandma Kun lives with her eldest son’s family in LaSeng Village in Salavan Province.<br>There are 8 people in Grandma Kun’s household: her son, his wife and their three children, as well as two unmarried sons. Grandma Kun and her family are Ta Oy, a minority ethnic group that lives mostly in Salavan province in southwestern Laos.</p>



<p>The Ta Oy are generally subsistence farmers: their crops are mainly for their own consumption and rarely for sale. They use slash-and-burn farming to grow upland rice, maize, sweet potatoes, beans and cassava.</p>



<p>The rains not only ensure that the crops are watered, but also supply the springs and streams from which Grand-Mère Kun draws water for domestic use. Unfortunately, this water is not safe to drink, and the family regularly suffers from stomach problems and diarrhoea.</p>



<p>In January 2023, the village was visited by Vilayphone, a sales representative from our partner TerraClear. During this visit, the village chief granted Vilayphone the right to set up a meeting to explain to the villagers the health risks associated with drinking water. Some of the villagers were not really aware of what was at stake.</p>

<p>Vilayphone continued the meeting by explaining how to make water safe to drink by boiling it for twenty minutes over an open fire. He also suggested that families buy a TerraClear filter. This filters water directly from the stream without having to boil it. The villagers no longer have to build a fire specifically for their water needs. It also saves wood and time spent gathering it in the woods.</p>

<p>Grandmother Kun was particularly keen to get a filter, but unfortunately her family couldn&#8217;t afford one. However, the family qualified for a subsidised filter by paying only 5 dollars instead of 45.</p>

Meet Philippe, SFE founder and current chairman


<p>Dans le village de LaSeng, dans la province de Salavane, vit Grand-Mère Kun. La maison de Grand-Mère Kun est bien remplie&nbsp;: elle habite avec son fils, sa femme et leurs trois enfants, ainsi que deux autres de ses fils célibataires. Toute la famille est d’origine Ta Oy, un groupe ethnique minoritaire vivant principalement dans cette partie du Sud-ouest du Laos.</p>



<p>Les Ta Oy sont généralement des agriculteurs de subsistance&nbsp;: leur récolte est surtout destinée à leur propre consommation et rarement à la vente. Ils pratiquent la culture sur brûlis pour cultiver du riz de montagne, du maïs, des patates douces, des haricots et du manioc.</p>



<p>Les pluies garantissent à la fois l’arrosage des cultures mais aussi l’approvisionnement des sources et des ruisseaux desquels Grand-Mère Kun tire l’eau pour son usage domestique. Malheureusement, cette eau n’est pas propre à la consommation et la famille souffre régulièrement de maux d’estomacs et de diarrhées.</p>



<p>En janvier 2023, le village a reçu la visite de Vilayphone, un représentant commercial de notre partenaire TerraClear. Lors de cette visite, le chef du village a accordé à Vilayphone le droit d’organiser une réunion pour expliquer aux villageois les méfaits de l’eau non-potable sur la santé. Certains villageois n’avaient pas réellement conscience de ces enjeux.</p>

<p>Vilayphone a poursuivi la réunion en expliquant comment rendre une eau propre à la consommation en la faisant bouillir vingt minutes sur feu ouvert. Il a également proposé aux familles de se procurer un filtre TerraClear. Celui-ci permet de filtrer directement l’eau provenant du ruisseau sans avoir à la faire bouillir. Les villageois n’ont plus à alimenter un feu spécifiquement pour leurs besoins en eau. Cela représente aussi des économies de bois et de temps dédié à le ramasser en forêt.</p>

Cependant, la famille remplissait les conditions requises pour recevoir un filtre subventionné en le payant seulement 5 dollars au lieu de 45.</p>

<p>In Salavan, one of the objectives of the SFE is to improve the nutrition of the population in ten target villages. As part of the health education project, Vanh, an agricultural advisor, and Vandala, an agricultural technician, offer villagers various activities: cultivation and maintenance of a vegetable garden, orchard planting, fish farming, fungiculture, but also livestock breeding and care.</p>



<p>Cattle is an important source of protein, but in Laos, it also represents savings. In case of financial need (health problems, marriage, investment), people sell their buffaloes, cows, goats or pigs. Therefore, it is essential to protect this source of both food and income.</p>



<p>Due to several misconceptions, few villagers vaccinate their livestock: the cost of vaccination is too high, there is a danger that pregnant females will lose their young, risk of side effects and death of the animals&#8230; This lack of knowledge leads to the loss of a large number of animals each year due to predictable diseases.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Faced with this tragedy, the SFE proposed to experiment a livestock vaccination campaign. </strong></p>



<p>In collaboration with the Salavan Province Department of Agriculture and the coordinators of the two districts where we work, our teams first trained two volunteer veterinarians per village. During a three-day training course, these villagers learned how to vaccinate, and how to diagnose and treat diseases.</p>



<p>For the next nine weeks, the SFE&#8217;s agricultural team, alongside provincial agricultural coordinators and managers, spent time in each village with the vets in the making. The aim was to give villagers the opportunity to have their animals vaccinated while continuing the practical training of the volunteers.</p>



<p>In three three-week sessions, 118 buffaloes, 296 cows, 26 goats, 10 pigs and 39 poultry have been vaccinated against 5 diseases.</p>

<p><strong>The campaign was a success</strong>. Indeed, it made it possible to deconstruct the prejudices on vaccination because no animal died or lost its young. Unfortunately, after the campaign began, some unvaccinated animals fell ill, but the villagers were able to see how effective the vaccines were in protecting their livestock. <strong>Many villagers are already interested in participating in the next campaign.</strong></p>



<p>For the SFE, this activity is particularly encouraging. The results were visible quickly, and the villagers were able to see how their own interests were benefited, while breaking prejudices that are harmful to their own health.</p>


The health of humans depends on the health of… animals!

<p>A Saravane, l’un des objectifs du SFE est d’améliorer la nutrition de la population dans dix villages cibles. Dans le cadre du projet d’éducation à la santé, Vanh, conseiller en agriculture, et Vandala, technicienne agricole, proposent aux villageois différentes activités&nbsp;: culture et entretien d’un jardin potager, plantation d’un verger, pisciculture, fongiculture, mais aussi élevage et soin du bétail.</p>







<p>Le bétail est une importante source de protéines et au Laos, il représente aussi une épargne. En cas de&nbsp; besoins financiers (problème de santé, mariage, investissement), les buffles, vaches, chèvres ou porcs peuvent être vendus. Il est donc essentiel de protéger cette source à la fois de nourriture, et de revenus.</p>



<p>En raison de plusieurs idées reçues,&nbsp;peu de villageois vaccinent leur bétail : coût trop élevé de la vaccination, danger pour les femelles portantes de perdre leurs petits, risques d’effets secondaires et de morts des animaux… Cette méconnaissance entraîne chaque année la perte d’une partie importante des bêtes en raison de maladies pourtant prévisibles.</p>



<p><strong>Face à ce drame, le SFE a proposé l’expérience d’une campagne de vaccination du bétail.</strong></p>



<p>En collaboration avec le Département de l’Agriculture de la province de Saravane et les coordinateurs des deux districts où nous travaillons, nos équipes ont tout d’abord formé deux vétérinaires volontaires par village. Au cours d’une formation de trois jours, ces villageois ont appris à vacciner, à diagnostiquer et soigner des maladies.</p>



<p>Pendant les neufs semaines suivantes, le binôme agricole du SFE, Vanh et Vandala, ainsi que les coordinateurs et les responsables agricoles de la province ont passé du temps dans chaque village aux côtés des vétérinaires en herbe. L’objectif était d’offrir aux villageois la possibilité de faire vacciner leurs animaux tout en poursuivant la formation pratique des volontaires.</p>



<p>Au cours de trois sessions de trois semaines, 118 buffles, 296 vaches, 26 chèvres, 10 cochons et 39 volailles ont été vaccinés contre 5 maladies.</p>

<p><strong>La campagne fût un succès. </strong>En effet, elle a permis de déconstruire les préjugés sur la vaccination car aucun animal n’est mort ni n’a perdu son petit. Malheureusement, après le début de cette campagne, certaines bêtes non vaccinées sont tombées malades, mais les villageois ont ainsi pu constater l’efficacité des vaccins pour protéger leur bétail. <strong>De nombreux villageois souhaitent d’ores et déjà participer à la prochaine campagne.</strong></p>



<p>Pour le SFE, cette activité est particulièrement encourageante. Les résultats étaient visibles rapidement et les villageois ont pu en constater les bénéfices pour leur propre intérêt, tout en balayant des préjugés néfastes pour leur propre santé.</p>

La santé des humains passe par celle… des animaux!


<p>In Salavan province, the SFE works in five health centres. These centres enable villagers to receive basic health care as close to their village as possible.</p>



<p>A health centre usually includes an vaccinaton service, follows up pregnant women until they give birth, and offers consultations for common illnesses and care for minor wounds. In most cases, it also has a small pharmacy.</p>



<p>Our work among health centers aims to improve the quality of care, in particular through the training of health professionals as well as the regular follow-up of patients.</p>

<p>Every month, a team from the SFE visits the health centres joined by a doctor and a nurse from the provincial hospital. Depending on the needs, they provide training in bedside care, monitoring young mothers and infants, and diagnosing and treating common diseases.</p>



<p>Together, they take up the consultation logs and review which diagnoses were made based on which clinical signs and whether the proposed treatments were appropriate. It is an excellent practical exercise to improve the reception, care, and follow-up of people.</p>



<p>The health centres have no medical laboratory, radiology or ultrasound service. As a result, many pregnant women cannot go to the hospital for an ultrasound scan, so the ultrasound machine comes to them! Indeed, this examination is essential to know the number of babies and their state of health, their position and that of the placenta, etc. This information makes it possible to advise mothers on the place best suited for future childbirth.</p>

<p>Through monthly evaluations, we support each centre in improving its storage system and overall hygiene. Following a needs assessment, we provide medical equipment, storage cabinets or medical waste bins.</p>



<p>In some health centres, the SFE also offers renovation work. For example, one of the centres was built by villagers and had a concrete floor, which was very dusty in the hot season, and tin roofs, which were extremely noisy when it rained. The SFE installed a proper ceiling and tiled floors. The centre is now more welcoming, and more comfortable while better meeting hygiene criteria.</p>

<p>In one year of these activities in the health centres, the cleanliness and quality of care have improved significantly. In addition, as health workers sometimes feel isolated and under-resourced, they are grateful for the support, more resources, training and regular visits.</p>



<p>The entire SFE team is grateful to be able to contribute to the continuous improvement of health services in southern Laos.</p>

Focus on Salavan health centres

<p>Laos is famous all over the world for its hand-woven silk. During a walk, we met Am Phone, a weaver from the north of the country. Her creations are now available in our shop.</p>







<p>Sitting on the porch of her house, Am Phone is working on a loom. Behind her hang brightly coloured silk threads that she will soon incorporate into her next works of art.</p>



<p>Am Phone has been weaving since she was 10 years old. Now 44 years old, she lives with her husband, daughter, and daughter&#8217;s family just outside of Luang Praband, a cute, ancient royal capital in northern Laos.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Every day, after the daily morning chores, Am Phone goes to work. Her wooden loom sits in a room that opens onto the road in front of their house. From the road, you can watch her perform the repetitive but meticulous tasks of silk weaving.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">An ancestral practice</h2>

<p>The silk threads are supplied by families in the area who raise silkworms. Most of the dyes used by Am Phone are natural. Each of the colours is obtained from traditional methods and products found in nature. The gentle yellow is the natural colour of one type of silk; blue comes from double-dipping the silk threads in fermented and boiled pots of indigo leaves. Red traditionally comes from the secretion of an insect found in the high mountain jungles. Orange results from a pokey tree seed pod. The dyes used by Am Phone are impregnated into the silk and the colours do not fade over time.</p>

<p>Since we met Am Phone, we have been working with them to produce scarves. The TerraClear scarves are designed to reflect the TerraClear flower logo. Using a traditional Lao woven flower motif to make a border at each end, TerraClear scarves are all woven by Am Phone and her daughter, Sulivan, who has followed her mother’s example in becoming a weaver. All the silk in the scarves is handwoven and sourced from hand-spun silk grown in Luang Prabang Province.</p>



<p>The creations of Amphone and Sulivan are available in our shop. All proceeds from sales will be donated to the <a href="https://admin.sfe-laos.org/terracare-project/" data-type="page" data-id="29578">TerraCare project</a>, run by the SFE and the social enterprise TerraClear. This project provides water filters for rural families in Laos and teaches them basic hygiene.</p>

From the Silk Road to your home !

<p>Dans la province de Saravane, le SFE travaille dans cinq centres de santé. Ces centres permettent aux villageois de recevoir les soins de base le plus près possible de leur village.</p>







<p>Un centre de santé intègre généralement un service de vaccination, il assure le suivi des femmes enceintes jusqu’à l’accouchement, et il offre des consultations pour les maladies courantes et les soins des plaies les moins graves. La plupart du temps, il dispose également d’une petite pharmacie.</p>



<p>Le travail du SFE dans les centres de santé a pour but d’améliorer la qualité des soins, notamment par la formation des professionnels des santé ainsi que le suivi régulier des patients.</p>

<p>Chaque mois, une équipe du SFE visite les centres de santé accompagnée d’un médecin et d’une infirmière de l’hôpital de province. En fonction des besoins, ils prodiguent une formation sur les soins, le suivi des mamans et des nourrissons, ou encore le diagnostic et le traitement des maladies courantes.</p>



<p>Ensemble, ils reprennent le registre des consultations et passent en revue quels diagnostics ont été posés en fonction de quels signes cliniques et si les traitements proposées étaient adaptés. Pour l&#8217;équipe sur place, c&#8217;est un excellent exercice pratique qui permet d&#8217;améliorer l’accueil, les soins et le suivi des patients.</p>



<p>Lorsque la sage-femme du SFE accompagne l’équipe, les sujets abordés sont généralement orientés vers les différents types d&#8217;accouchements et les soins aux nouveau-nés.</p>



<p>Les centres de santé sont dépourvus de laboratoire, de service de radiologie ou d&#8217;échographie. De ce fait, de nombreuses femmes enceintes n’ayant pas la possibilité de se rendre à l’hôpital pour faire une échographie, c’est l’échographe qui se rend à elles ! Un médecin formé en échographie et disposant d’un échographe portable parcours donc les centres de santé pour proposer ses compétences. En effet, cet examen est primordial pour connaître le nombre de fœtus et leur état de santé, leur position et celle du placenta… Ces informations permettent de conseiller les mères sur le lieu le mieux adapté au futur accouchement.</p>

<p>Grâce aux évaluations mensuelles, nous accompagnons chaque centre dans l’amélioration de son système de rangement et de son hygiène globale. En fonction des besoins, nous livrons du matériel médical, des armoires de rangements ou des poubelles médicales.</p>



<p>Dans certains centres de santé, le SFE propose également des travaux de rénovation. Par exemple, l&#8217;un des centres ayant été construit par les villageois, il était pourvu d&#8217;un sol en béton, très poussiéreux en saison chaude, et de toits en tôle, extrêmement bruyant lorsqu&#8217;il pleuvait. Le SFE y a fait installer un plafond digne de ce nom et poser du carrelage. Le centre est maintenant plus accueillant, plus confortable, tout en répondant mieux aux critères d’hygiène. </p>

<p>En une année de ces activités dans les centres de santé, la propreté et la qualité des soins se sont nettement améliorés. De plus, les soignants se sentant parfois isolés et manquant de moyens, ils sont reconnaissants d&#8217;avoir de l&#8217;aide, plus de ressources, des formations et des visites régulières. </p>



<p>Toute l&#8217;équipe du SFE est reconnaissante de pouvoir contribuer à l&#8217;amélioration continue des services de santé dans le Sud du Laos.</p>

Zoom sur les centres de santé de Saravane

<p><strong>Last autumn, the Salavan Health Education Project team welcomed Dr Chi, a medical expert from the Perth Childrens Hospital in Australia for several training courses.</strong></p>







<p>Dr Chi’s experience was invaluable, and she was warmly welcomed by the staff at the Salavan Provincial Hospital (SPH), Lao Ngam District Hospital, and the health centres in our project.</p>



<p>During her three-month stay, Dr Chi conducted two new training on neonatal resuscitation, and basic adult life support with an emphasis on pregnant women.</p>



<p>Adult Basic resuscitation is now being rolled-out to every member of staff in all departments of SPH month by month. <strong>By the end of the 2022, with Dr Chi’s help, we had trained three trainers in adult resuscitation and 36 staff. In December, the Neonatal resuscitation refresher courses went very well, and 27 staff from the departments caring for newborns have been trained so far.</strong></p>

<p>The feedback was positive. The use of roleplay, and plenty of hands-on practice, was enjoyed by everyone. There was a practical test at the end, and a certificate presented.</p>



<p>Dr Chi also worked with the paediatric team, training and supporting on topics including child diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.</p>



<p><strong>This kind of opportunity helps developping the skills of health personnel in Salavan and the surrounding area. Gradually, the medical teams increase their knowledge, improve their skills, and gain autonomy.</strong></p>

Life-support training and resuscitation refresher courses in Salavan.

<p><strong>Inclusion of people with disabilities means leaving no one behind. This is an essential aspect of the SFE&#8217;s values. Together with our local partners, we are developing a new project to provide people with physical disabilities with more appropriate access to care and rehabilitation services.</strong></p>







<p>A study conducted by the SFE in eight villages in the province of Attapeu showed that about 4% of their inhabitants have a disability, mostly physical. According to our observations, 50% of the people identified having mobility problems and cannot perform daily tasks such as dressing, washing, going to the toilet and even eating on their own.</p>



<p>Due to a lack of know-how, training and equipment, <strong>medical staff pay little attention to these people who struggle to receive appropriate care. In their villages, people with disabilities are isolated from the group. </strong>They are mocked and feel rejected. Indeed, there is a general lack of awareness of the reality and inclusion of people with disabilities. Moreover, the province of Attapeu has few services dedicated to their care.</p>

<p>To address this challenge, the SFE is currently developing a project in collaboration with its local partners. Called Better Together, this project aims to improve the daily lives of people with disabilities in this province.</p>



<p>First of all, we want to raise awareness in communities about equal rights and in particular about the inclusion of disability in everyday life. <strong>More than 9,000 people in 8 partner villages will receive training on this subject.</strong> Support groups will be created in each of these villages.</p>



<p>Our objective is also to adapt the premises of hospitals and health centres to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility. Finally, physiotherapists will be trained in the management of disabilities in order to offer sufferers more appropriate care and rehabilitation. <strong>In total, 206 women, 173 men and 25 children will benefit from this project.</strong></p>



<p>After a long study and planning phase, the Better Together project will be officially launched in July 2023.</p>

Better access to care for people with disabilities in Attapeu

<p><strong>A l’automne dernier, l’équipe du projet d’éducation à la santé de Saravane a accueilli le Docteur Chi, une experte médicale venue de l&#8217;hôpital pédiatrique de Perth, en Australie. Sa visite a profité à tous les membres de l&#8217;équipe médicale et leur a permis d&#8217;étendre leurs connaissances dans plusieurs domaines.</strong></p>







<p>Lors de son séjour de trois mois, le Docteur Chi a conduit deux nouvelles formations à destination  de plusieurs équipes médicales venues de l’hôpital provincial de Saravane, de l&#8217;hôpital du district de Lao Ngam et des centres de santé avec lesquelles nous travaillons. La formation comprenait notamment la réanimation néonatale, et la réanimation des adultes en mettant l’accent sur les femmes enceintes.</p>



<p>La réanimation des adultes est désormais déployée auprès de chaque membre du personnel dans tous les services de l’hôpital provincial de Saravane.<strong> À la fin de l&#8217;année 2022, avec l&#8217;aide du Docteur Chi, le SFE a formé trois formateurs en réanimation pour adultes et 36 membres du personnel.</strong></p>

<p>Les réactions ont été positives et, grâce à l&#8217;utilisation de jeux de rôles et de nombreux exercices pratiques, tout le monde a apprécié la formation. Un test pratique a eu lieu à la fin et un certificat a été remis.</p>



<p><strong>En fin d’année, 27 membres du personnel du service de néonatalogie ont profité d’une mise à niveau en réanimation néonatale.</strong> Une infirmière en pédiatrie très enthousiaste nous a confié que c’était la première fois qu’elle était formée à ce sujet.</p>



<p>Enfin, le Docteur Chi a travaillé avec les équipes médicales pour apporter son expertise sur des sujets tels que la réadaptation, le diagnostic et le traitement des enfants.</p>



<p>C’est grâce à ce type d’opportunité que le SFE contribue à développer les compétences du personnel de santé à Saravane et des environs. Progressivement, les équipes médicales développent leurs connaissances, améliorent leur savoir-faire, et gagnent en autonomie.</p>

Formation en réanimation et mise à niveau en pédiatrie à Saravane

<p><strong>L’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap, c&#8217;est de ne laisser personne pour compte. C’est un aspect essentiel des valeurs du SFE. En collaboration avec nos partenaires locaux, nous développons un nouveau projet afin d’offrir aux personnes avec un handicap physique un accès plus adapté aux services de soins et de réadaptation.</strong></p>







<p>Une étude conduite par le SFE dans huit villages de la province d’Attapeu a démontré qu’environ 4% de leurs habitants sont en situation de handicap, le plus souvent d’ordre physique. D’après nos observations, 50% des personnes identifiées ont des problèmes de mobilité et ne peuvent pas accomplir seules les tâches quotidiennes telles que se vêtir, se laver, aller aux toilettes et même manger.</p>



<p>Par manque de savoir-faire, de formations et de matériel, le personnel médical porte peu attention à <strong>ces personnes qui peinent à recevoir des soins appropriés. Dans leurs villages, les personnes handicapées sont mises à l’écart du groupe.</strong> Elles subissent des moqueries et se sentent rejetées. En effet, de manière générale, la population est peu sensibilisée à la réalité des personnes en situation de handicap et à leur inclusion. Par ailleurs, la province d’Attapeu dispose de peu de services dédiés à leur prise en charge.</p>

<p>Pour répondre à ce défi, le SFE développe actuellement un projet en collaboration avec ses partenaires locaux. Baptisé <em>Better Together</em>, ce projet a pour objectif d’améliorer le quotidien des personnes handicapées dans cette province.</p>



<p>Tout d’abord, nous souhaitons sensibiliser les communautés à l’égalité des droits et en particulier à l’inclusion du handicap dans la vie quotidienne. <strong>Ainsi, plus de 9000 personnes réparties dans 8 villages partenaires bénéficieront d’une formation à ce sujet. </strong>Des groupes de soutien seront notamment créés dans chacun de ces villages.</p>



<p>Notre objectif est également l’aménagement des locaux des hôpitaux et des centres de santé afin de faciliter l’accès des personnes à mobilité réduite. Enfin, des kinésithérapeutes seront formés à la prise en charge du handicap dans le but d&#8217;offrir aux personnes souffrantes des soins et une réadaptation plus appropriée. <strong>Au total, 206 femmes, 173 hommes et 25 enfants bénéficieront de ce projet.</strong></p>

Un meilleur accès aux soins pour les personnes avec handicap à Attapeu

<p><strong>In Laos, there is no shortage of water. The Mekong River, one of the longest rivers in the world, runs through the country, and rainfall is abundant for several months a year. It is an aggravating factor of poverty</strong></p>







<p>Yet, drinking clean water is not guaranteed. Half of the country&#8217;s schools, and three-quarters of health facilities, still do not have direct access to clean drinking water.</p>



<p>The lack of clean water is a vicious circle. In remote villages, women and young girls waste time and energy having to fetch water several times a day. This often unclean water promotes the development of diseases that penalize an entire family. Poor sanitation and hygiene conditions increase the risk of transmission of these diseases and of epidemics.</p>



<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Providing clean water is not just about breaking a vicious circle. It is making it virtuous!</h3>

Fighting poverty begins with a simple glass of water

<p><strong>Au Laos, l’eau ne manque pas. Le pays est traversé par le Mékong, l’un des plus longs fleuves du monde et les pluies sont abondantes plusieurs mois par an.&nbsp;Pourtant, boire de l&#8217;eau potable n&#8217;est pas garanti. C&#8217;est un facteur aggravant de la pauvreté.</strong></p>







<p>Les chiffres sont préoccupants. La moitié des écoles du pays, et trois-quarts des établissements de santé, n’ont toujours pas d’accès direct à une eau propre à la consommation.</p>



<p><strong>L’absence d’eau potable est un cercle vicieux.</strong> Dans les villages reculés, les femmes et les filles perdent du temps et de l’énergie à devoir aller puiser de l’eau plusieurs fois par jours. Cette eau souvent impropre favorise le développement de maladies qui pénalisent toute une famille. Les mauvaises conditions d&#8217;assainissement et d&#8217;hygiène augmentent le risque de transmission de ces maladies, et donc d’épidémies.&nbsp;­</p>

<p>­L’eau potable donne aux familles plus de temps pour cultiver des aliments et gagner un revenu. Associée à la construction de latrines, elle freine le développement des maladies et permet aux enfants d’aller à l&#8217;école. Ce sont autant de clés qui permettent de <strong>lutter contre la pauvreté sur le long terme</strong>.</p>

Enrayer la pauvreté commence par un simple verre d’eau !

<p>Laos is famous all over the world for its hand-woven silk. During a walk, we met Am Phone, a weaver from the north of the country. Her creations are now available in our shop.</p>







<p>Sitting on the porch of her house, Am Phone is working on a loom. Behind her hang brightly coloured silk threads that she will soon incorporate into her next works of art.</p>



<p>Am Phone has been weaving since she was 10 years old. Now 44 years old, she lives with her husband, daughter, and daughter&#8217;s family just outside of Luang Praband, a cute, ancient royal capital in northern Laos.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Every day, after the daily morning chores, Am Phone goes to work. Her wooden loom sits in a room that opens onto the road in front of their house. From the road, you can watch her perform the repetitive but meticulous tasks of silk weaving.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">An ancestral practice</h2>

<p>The silk threads are supplied by families in the area who raise silkworms. Most of the dyes used by Am Phone are natural. Each of the colours is obtained from traditional methods and products found in nature. The gentle yellow is the natural colour of one type of silk; blue comes from double-dipping the silk threads in fermented and boiled pots of indigo leaves. Red traditionally comes from the secretion of an insect found in the high mountain jungles. Orange results from a pokey tree seed pod. The dyes used by Am Phone are impregnated into the silk and the colours do not fade over time.</p>

<p>Since we met Am Phone, we have been working with them to produce scarves. The TerraClear scarves are designed to reflect the TerraClear flower logo. Using a traditional Lao woven flower motif to make a border at each end, TerraClear scarves are all woven by Am Phone and her daughter, Sulivan, who has followed her mother’s example in becoming a weaver. All the silk in the scarves is handwoven and sourced from hand-spun silk grown in Luang Prabang Province.</p>



<p>The creations of Am Phone and Sulivan are available in our shop. All proceeds from sales will be donated to the <a href="https://admin.sfe-laos.org/terracare-project/" data-type="page" data-id="29578">TerraCare project</a>, run by the SFE and the social enterprise TerraClear. This project provides water filters for rural families in Laos and teaches them basic hygiene.</p>

<p>Le Laos est réputé dans le monde entier pour sa soie tissée à la main. C’est lors d’une promenade que nous avons fait la rencontre d’Am Phon, tisseuse dans le nord du pays. Ses créations sont désormais disponibles dans notre <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.helloasso.com/associations/service-fraternel-d-entraide/boutiques/livre-ma-maitresse-est-partie-vivre-au-laos" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.helloasso.com/associations/service-fraternel-d-entraide/boutiques/livre-ma-maitresse-est-partie-vivre-au-laos" target="_blank">nouvelle boutique</a>.</p>







<p>Assise sur le porche de sa maison, Am Phon s’affaire sur un métier à tisser en bois. Derrière elle sont suspendus des fils de soie aux couleurs éclatantes qu’elle va bientôt intégrer dans ses prochaines créations.</p>



<p>Am Phon tisse depuis qu’elle a 10 ans. Aujourd’hui âgée de 44 ans, elle vit avec son mari, sa fille et la famille de cette dernière à Luang Prabang, une charmante ville et ancienne capitale royale du nord du Laos.</p>



<p>Tous les jours, après les tâches quotidiennes matinales, Am Phon se met au travail. Son métier à tisser trône dans une pièce ouverte sur le devant de sa maison. Depuis la route, on peut l’observer exécuter les tâches répétitives, mais minutieuses du tissage de la soie.</p>

<p>Les fils lui sont fournis par des familles des environs, qui élèvent des vers à soie. La plupart des teintes utilisées par Am Phon sont naturelles. Chacune des couleurs est obtenue à partir de méthodes traditionnelles et de produits trouvés dans la nature : le jaune pâle est la couleur d’origine d’une sorte de soie ; le bleu provient de la fermentation de feuilles indigo ; le rouge est obtenu à partir de sécrétions d’un insecte que l’on trouve dans la jungle ; l’orange résulte de la cosse d’une graine d’arbre. Les teintes utilisées par Am Phon sont imprégnées dans la soie et les couleurs ne s’estompent pas dans le temps.</p>

<p>Depuis notre rencontre avec Am Phone, nous collaborons avec elle pour produire des écharpes avec la même fleur qui a inspiré le logo de TerraClear, partenaire du SFE. Les écharpes sont toutes tissées par Am Phone et sa fille Sulivan. Cette dernière marche dans les pas de sa maman pour devenir tisserande et perpétrer une pratique millénaire.</p>



<p>Les créations d’Am Phon et Sulivan sont disponibles dans notre boutique. L’intégralité des recettes de la vente sera reversée au <a href="/projet-terracare/" data-type="page" data-id="29584" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">projet TerraClear</a>, mené par le SFE et l’entreprise sociale TerraClear. Ce projet consiste à&nbsp;fournir des filtres à eau pour les familles rurales du Laos et à leur enseigner les gestes d’hygiène de base.</p>

<p>Access to drinking water seems obvious to us!&#8230; And yet it is not the case for everyone…</p>



<p>Miss V. lives in a remote village in Thateng district, Sekong province. She says, &#8220;Before, my family was in poor health, but now I have a latrine and a water filter, my family is healthier and lives a much better life”.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, many people in Laos are less fortunate than Miss. V. In southern Laos, village communities still have very limited access to clean water, leading to health issues especially for children.</p>



<p>The <a href="/terracare-project/">TerraCare project</a> was born to help solve these problems. SFE and TerraClear (a local social enterprise that produces and sells water filters) joined forces to offer a subsidy system to enable the poorest families to get a water filter (price of 45&nbsp;$ for a filter reduced to 5&nbsp;$ thanks to a 40&nbsp;$ subsidy).</p>



<p>The TerraCare project will provide <strong>drinking water</strong>, give <strong>basic hygiene training</strong> (hand washing), and promote the construction and use of <strong>latrines for 10,000 families</strong> in southern Laos.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What will the money raised be used for?</h3>



<p>The money collected will be used to subsidize the filters and to fund the trainings given to the families on the importance of drinking clean water, washing their hands, not defecating in the open air, building latrines, and taking care of the filter.</p>

<p>L&#8217;accès à l&#8217;eau potable semble une évidence pour nous !… Et pourtant ce n&#8217;est pas le cas pour tous, notamment pour les familles les plus défavorisées du sud du Laos…</p>



<p>Mme V. vit dans un village isolé du district de Thatèng, dans la province de Sékong. Elle témoigne : «&nbsp;Avant, ma famille était en mauvaise santé, mais maintenant que j’ai des latrines et un filtre à eau, ma famille est en meilleure santé&nbsp;et mène une vie beaucoup plus pratique&nbsp;».</p>

<p>Malheureusement, beaucoup de personnes au Laos ont moins de chance que Mme V. Dans le Sud du Laos, les communautés villageoises ont encore un accès très limité à de l’eau potable, engendrant des problèmes de santé surtout chez les enfants.</p>



<p>Ainsi le <a href="https://www.sfe-laos.org/projet-terracare/">projet TerraCare</a> permet de <strong>fournir de l’eau potable, d&#8217;enseigner les gestes d&#8217;hygiène de base (lavage de mains), et de promouvoir la construction et l’usage de latrines auprès de 10&nbsp;000 familles </strong>parmi les plus vulnérables du Sud du Laos.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A quoi servira l&#8217;argent collecté ?</h3>



<p>L&#8217;argent collecté permettra de <strong>subventionner des&nbsp;filtres à eau pour les familles pauvres</strong> et de financer les formations à la maintenance des filtres, sur l’hygiène, pour la construction de latrines, qui vont de pair avec la&nbsp;distribution des filtres.</p>

<p>Here is a beautiful book for all, young and old … from Laos and elsewhere, in a bilingual French and Lao edition. You will discover a bit of the Lao way of life and the delicate writing style of this singing language.</p>



<p>Dawn Marie Lewis was a teacher in the US for 10 years before moving to Laos in June 2018 to begin work as a development worker in a project with SFE.</p>



<p>The following year, <strong>Dawn wrote the book “My Teacher moved to Laos</strong>” to bridge the distance between life for children in the US and Europe and life for children in Laos.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This book highlights aspects of everyday life form a child&#8217;s point of interest. The whimsical watercolor and ink or oil drawings capture the essence of rural life in Laos, including daily aspects such as food, toys, school life and home life, with an emphasis on access to clean water, which children in developed countries may not be aware of.</p>



<p>Written in English and Lao, or French and Lao, the main text is simple and appropriate to younger children, while additional information is incorporated as subtext on every page, making each page accessible and interesting for children and adults of all ages.</p>



<p>In this way, you are participating in the <a href="/terracare-project/">TerraCare</a> project, which is changing the lives of many families in southern Laos through access to clean water.</p>

<ul><li>Health: reduction of water-related and respiratory diseases by half by reducing smoke in boil water homes.</li><li>Social: reduction of the effort required to obtain drinking water. Improves in particular the lives of children and women.</li><li>Financial: less expensive than other options (bottled water, boiling).</li><li>Environmental: 1 filter means a reduction of 1.4 tons of wood usually used by the household each year. The filter does not require any source of energy, thus favoring the conservation of the local forest.</li></ul>

<h2 class="blue wp-block-heading">Un jeune cycliste court pour le Laos</h2>



<p>«&nbsp;Un cœur pour le Laos 2021&nbsp;» vise spécifiquement à soutenir un projet de <a href="https://www.sfe-laos.org/attapeu-handicap">soutien aux personnes en situation de handicap</a> et un projet d’amélioration des capacités de l’<a href="https://www.sfe-laos.org/attapeu-ecole-dinfirmiers">école d’infirmiers/ères à Attapeu</a> ainsi que les expatriés français en charge des projets. </p>



<p>Deux énènements maquent cette action&nbsp;:</p>

<p>L’an dernier, en plein confinement je m’étais engagé dans une action pour soutenir l’ONG SFE au Laos en courant autour de l’église d’Andlau dans le 67, pour récolter des fonds pour un projet de soutien aux personnes en situation de handicap dans une province reculée du Laos.</p>

<p>Cette année, j’ai décidé de soutenir le SFE en participant à « l’Évènement Vélo » de l’année, une intense compétition qui vise à faire le plus de fois possible le tour du circuit du Castelet dans le Var (5,8km) durant 24 heures&nbsp;! J’ai rebaptisé cette compétition «&nbsp;24H pour le LAOS&nbsp;!&nbsp;»</p>



<p>Célie et Yannick Wagner, responsables de ce projet, sont de chers amis qui ont tout plaqué pour s’engager dans cette ONG, pour apporter du soutien dans ce pays qui leur est cher, le Laos.</p>



<p>Mon objectif est de trouver des sponsors qui acceptent de faire un don au SFE, soit un don fixe, soit – si vous êtes joueurs – en fonction de ma performance les 3 et 4 juillet (par exemple 10, 20, 50 centimes, 1 ou 2 euros par km).</p>



<p>J’espère faire entre 350 et 400 km &#8212; si j’arrive à rouler entre 20 et 25 km/h pendant 24h</p>

Un cœur pour le Laos 2021


<p>How can people increase the protein content in their diet, as well as their sources of income, in a country like Laos where certain populations are experiencing major malnutrition?</p>



<p>To do this, the SFE&#8217;s collaboration with the French NGO <a href="https://www.actions-laos.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dynamic Actions (DA)</a> has made it possible to co-produce an educational booklet in Lao, accessible to villagers, teachers and students, a project coordinated by Philippe Aureille of DA.</p>

<p>This booklet presents a proven method for the sustainable production of crickets for consumption. It helps in a simple way to set up and develop livestock farming. It describes the construction of the breeding cage in a very easy way. He explains how to feed insects with local ingredients and low-cost feed supplements. It details the egg-laying cycles and then gives advice on harvesting and culinary preparation.</p>



<p>These instructions not only enable the poorest villagers to easily obtain protein but also to obtain additional income through an Income Generating Activity.</p>



<p>The booklet was printed on July 31, 2020 in Vientiane.</p>

A source of affordable protein


<p>Comment augmenter la teneur en protéines dans son alimentation mais aussi ses sources de revenus, dans un pays comme le Laos où certaines populations connaissent une malnutrition majeure&nbsp;?</p>



<p>Pour cela, la collaboration du SFE avec <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.actions-laos.org/" target="_blank">Dynamic Actions (DA)</a> a permis de co-réaliser un livret pédagogique en Lao, accessible aux villageois, aux instituteurs et aux élèves, projet coordonné par Philippe Aureille de DA.</p>

<p>Ce livret présente une méthode attestée de production raisonnée de grillons pour la consommation. Il aide de manière simple à la mise en place et au développement de l’élevage. Il décrit la construction de la cage d’élevage en toute facilité. Il explique comment nourrir les insectes à base d’ingrédients locaux et de complément alimentaire à faible coût. Il détaille les cycles de ponte puis donne des conseils sur la récolte et la préparation culinaire.</p>



<p>Ces instructions permettent non seulement aux villageois les plus pauvres de se procurer aisément des protéines mais aussi d’obtenir un revenu supplémentaire par une Activité Génératrice de Revenus.</p>



<p>Le livret a été imprimé le 31 juillet 2020 à Vientiane.</p>

<p id="wligntop">A US$30,000 emergency response activity funded by SFE, BASAID and French Embassy to combat the global COVID-19 pandemic has been approved by the Ministry of Foreign affairs of Laos on the 26th of October 2020. The 12 months activity will be implemented basically in the Provincial Hospital, District and 10 target Villages of Attapeu Province.</p>



<p>The response activity was designed to support the implementation of the national plan for hospital preparedness with the highlight on equipping the health care providers with clinical knowledge and skill to provide high quality, respectful care for patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.</p>

<p class="aligntop">Moreover, hospitals in Attapeu Province like any other hospitals face many challenges when dealing with COVID-19, from a shortage of supplies, equipment, to infrastructure that is difficult to adapt for the safe care of the infectious patient. So part of the activity offers support to decrease the impact of this problem to ensure the safety of the medical staff and patients.</p>

<p>On the other hand, prior to the implementation of the emergency response, the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the representative of Attapeu Provincial Health Department and SFE has been on the scheduled on the 17th of November 2020. This inauguration will allow the beginning of the implementation process.</p>

<p class="aligntop">Une action d’urgence de 30 000 dollars US pour lutter contre la pandémie mondiale de COVID-19, financée par le SFE, BASAID et l’Ambassade de France, a été approuvée par le ministère des Affaires étrangères du Laos le 26 octobre 2020. Il s’agit d’une activité d’une durée de 12 mois, qui sera mise en œuvre essentiellement dans l’hôpital provincial et dans le district d’Attapeu, ainsi que dans dix villages cibles de la province.</p>



<p>Cette action a été conçue pour soutenir la mise en œuvre du plan national de préparation des hôpitaux, en mettant l’accent sur la formation des prestataires de soins de santé, afin qu’ils acquièrent des connaissances et des compétences cliniques permettant de fournir des soins de haute qualité et respectueux aux patients dont la présence de COVID-19 est suspectée ou confirmée.</p>

<p class="aligntop">En outre, les hôpitaux de la province d&#8217;Attapeu, comme tous les autres hôpitaux, sont confrontés à de nombreux défis lorsqu’ils traitent les cas de COVID-19, allant d&#8217;une pénurie de fournitures et d’équipements à une infrastructure difficile à adapter pour assurer la sécurité des soins aux patients infectieux. Une partie de l’activité offre donc un soutien pour diminuer l&#8217;impact de ce problème afin d&#8217;assurer la sécurité du personnel médical et des patients.</p>

<p>D’autre part, avant la mise en œuvre ce plan d&#8217;urgence, la signature du protocole d&#8217;accord entre le représentant du Département provincial de la santé d’Attapeu et le SFE a été prévue le 17 novembre 2020. Cette inauguration permettra de mettre en route ce projet d’un an.</p>

<p>SFE is proud to have contributed to this book by sharing its experience with the social company <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.terraclear.org/" target="_blank">TerraClear</a> in the district of Thatèng (see page 41 of the guide).</p>



<p>The program continues with the <a href="/terracare-project">TerraCare project</a>, a partnership between SFE and TerraClear for the development and monitoring of the water filter program in the 4 southern provinces.</p>

<p>A dam collapsed Monday evening, July 23, 2019 in the province of Attapeu, Laos. The disaster occurred in the district of Sanamxay, a district bordering Cambodia. Located west of the provincial capital, this district was the first one where the SFE has worked in this province, apart from the provincial hospital where it began its work.</p>



<p>The flooding affected 7 villages and nearly 12,000 people.</p>

<p>The SFE and other NGOs were involved in the medium term to help these thousands of families who lost everything. The SFE solicited specific donations for this emergency action, which lasted several months, to enable the SFE to make its contribution to the disaster victims.</p>



<p>With the rainy season, these survivors found themselves in an extremely vulnerable situation. Our teams decided to support the relief efforts and to accompany the authorities to go and lend a hand at the disaster site, and to provide first aid materials (water filters, mosquito nets, stoves, etc&#8230;) in the coming days.</p>

<p>Our SFE HEDP project in the province of Salavan ended this summer. With the lockdown imposed by the Covid, we were behind schedule in our activities but most of it could be finished before the rainy season.</p>

<p class="alifntop">We are pleased to have been able to complete, with the participation of the villagers, 485 toilets in 9 out of 10 villages and 5 water systems that provide running water to 952 people. Now, women and children no longer need to fetch water and carry their heavy bucket home, they just turn on the tap to cook, wash dishes or wash. This is a big step forward for hygiene and a big improvement toward the villagers&#8217; health. The inauguration ceremony for the systems and toilets allowed the provincial authorities to come and realize the quality of the work that SFE is doing in these villages.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A new project for 2021</h3>



<p>According to the latest discussions with health officials in Salavan, they are happy with what is being done and have asked us to create a new project to continue helping. We are therefore preparing, the new project which should start in 2021. We have already chosen 10 new villages, 5 health centers and 2 hospitals.</p>

<p>Notre projet SFE d&#8217;aide au développement dans la province de Saravane s’est terminé cet été. Avec le confinement imposé par le Covid. nous avons pris du retard dans les activités mais l’essentiel a pu être terminé avant la saison des pluies.</p>

<p>La cérémonie d’inauguration des systèmes et des toilettes a permis aux autorités de la province de venir réaliser la qualité du travail que SFE fait dans ces villages.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Un nouveau projet pour 2021</h3>



<p>D’après les dernières discussions avec les responsables de la santé à Salavan, ils sont contents de ce qui est fait et nous ont demandé de créer un nouveau projet pour continuer à aider. Nous préparons donc en parallèle de cette fin de projet, le <a href="/saravane-sante">nouveau projet</a> qui devrait débuter en 2021. Nous avons déjà choisi 10 nouveaux villages, 5 centres de santé et 2 hôpitaux.</p>

<p>The SFE is preparing to develop projects dealing with inclusion and mentale health, in partnership with local associations.</p>



<p><a href="https://admin.sfe-laos.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=29688&amp;action=edit">One of the projects</a> is located in the province of Attapeu, and aims to provide the means to best include disabled people in social and economic life, both through adapted training and by raising community awareness.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://admin.sfe-laos.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=29741&amp;action=edit">second project</a> aims to support a local association, with two women medical specialists, to help people with mental health problems – an area in which very few services are available in the country.</p>

Perspective for 2021


<p>Le SFE se prépare à développer des projets autour de l’inclusion et de la santé mentale, en partenariat avec des associations locales.</p>



<p>L&#8217;<a href="/attapeu-handicap">un des projets </a>se situe dans la province d&#8217;Attapeu, et vise à donner les moyens d&#8217;inclure au mieux les personnes handicapées dans la vie sociale et économique, à la fois par des formations adaptées et par une sensibilisation de la communauté.</p>



<p>Le <a href="/handicap-mental">deuxième projet</a> vise à accompagner une association locale, avec deux femmes médecins spécialistes, pour l&#8217;accompagnement de personnes affectées dans leur santé mentale, un domaine dans lequel très peu de services sont disponibles dans le pays.</p>

<p>Le SFE est fier d’avoir pu contribuer à cet ouvrage en partageant son expérience avec l’entreprise à but soical <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.terraclear.org/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.terraclear.org/" target="_blank">TerraClear</a> dans le district de Thatèng (voir page 41 du guide).</p>

<p class="aligntop">Un barrage s’est effondré lundi soir 23 juillet 2018 dans la province d’Attapeu, au Laos. La catastrophe s’est produite dans le district de Sanamxay, un district qui jouxte le Cambodge. Situé à l’ouest de la capitale provinciale, ce district a été le premier où le SFE ait travaillé dans cette province, en dehors de l’hôpital provincial où il a commencé son action.</p>



<p>L’inondation a touché 7 villages et affecté près de 12’000 personnes.</p>

<p>Les premiers secours ont été gérés par les services de l’État.</p>



<p>Le SFE et d’autres ONG se sont impliqués à moyen terme au secours de ces milliers de familles qui ont tout perdu. Le SFE a sollicité des dons spécifiques pour cette action d’urgence, qui s’est étalée sur plusieurs mois, pour permettre au SFE d’apporter sa contribution aux sinistrés.</p>



<p>Avec la saison des pluies, ces rescapés se sont donc retrouvés donc dans une situation extrêmement vulnérable. Nos équipes ont décidé de soutenir les efforts des secours et d&#8217;accompagner les autorités pour aller prêter main forte sur les lieux de la catastrophe, et pour fournir du matériel de premier secours (filtres à eau, moustiquaires, réchauds, etc&#8230;) dans les jours qui viennent.</p>

<p>Le village de Ban Sentai est l’un des plus pauvres de Thateng, dans la province de Sékong et n’a pas d’accès direct à l’eau. Environ 60 familles vivent dans ce village, principalement de la minorité ethnique Alak. Ils pratiquent la chasse et tirent leur subsistance de cultures agricoles traditionnelles comme le riz, divers tubercules, et aussi des ressources de la forêt. La construction d’un système de distribution d’eau, comprenant un château d’eau avec réservoir est le but à atteindre en trente journées de travail, les samedi et dimanche étant considérés comme des jours de repos. Les gens participent au plan de travail à tour de rôle en tenant compte des nécessités du travail agricole, en cette saison les soins aux jeunes plantations de riz et leur irrigation. Néanmoins les villageois sont très motivés par le projet dont le but est.&nbsp;: «&nbsp;de l’eau pour tous&nbsp;!&nbsp;»</p>
